How To Remove the Filthy Surroundings Moodlet in The Sims 4

If your Sims are always uncomfortable due to Filthy Surroundings and you can’t find the source, it’s time to do some detective work. There is indeed something dirty in the house that you’re not seeing.

Even if the house looks clean, something is causing the bad smell. Check for hidden trash, spoiled food, or dirty objects that could be causing the moodlet.

What’s Causing the Filthy Surroundings Moodlet in The Sims 4?

Check the Top Shelves

Look at the top shelves of kitchen cabinets. You might find dirty plates hiding there.

Do check all your shelves! Sometimes there’s a dirty dish on a shelf, especially on walls with half shelves, and you might not notice it.

You might find plates in the weirdest places because your Sims don’t want to walk to the sink or dishwasher.

You could also hire a one-time maid to see if they can fix the problem.

Inspect the Bins

Corrupted bins could be the problem. Delete and replace outside bins to see if the moodlet goes away. Sometimes the stinky bins affect your Sims inside and outside the house.

Also, check indoor bins by putting them in household inventory and returning them one by one until you find the culprit.

Check the Pressure Cooker and Kettle

Do you have a pressure cooker or a kettle? They might be causing the smell.

The smell might disappear when you put the cooker and kettle in your Sim’s inventory and come back when you place them back on the counter. Try experimenting with it and see if that helps.

Unfortunately, cleaning or upgrading the self-clean feature won’t solve the problem.

Foul Fish

Make sure there’s no fish in the house or your Sim’s inventory. Empty the fridge using the “Empty Fridge” interaction to get rid of rotten food.

If you put a fish with “Foul” quality in an aquarium, your Sim will get the Filthy Surroundings moodlet when in the room. The fish will swim fine, but the aquarium still feels dirty.

Clean the Inventory

Some items in your Sim’s inventory might be causing the moodlet. Clear it out to see if that helps.

Sometimes this happens if your Sims have spoiled food in their personal inventory.

Mop the Floor

Ensure the floor is clean. Sometimes food thrown for pets gets left behind. It could also be a puddle of pee.

Deep Clean Your House

Clean all kitchen areas thoroughly, including the sink, microwave, and counters. Don’t forget to check under the sink and remove kitchen furniture if needed.

Sometimes decorative items, like debug wine glasses, can cause the moodlet.

Check under furniture for hidden dirty items, like water glasses. These can be hard to see and often get pushed under couches during game glitches.

Remove trash plants as they can make your Sims uncomfortable.

The Filthy Lot Challenge

The Filthy Lot challenge makes objects dirty faster, which might be why the moodlet keeps appearing.

How Low Hygiene and Filth Affects Sims

Sims won’t pass away if they live in a really messy place. They’ll just smell bad and get the Filthy Surroundings moodlet all the time.

By the way, if the kids and teenagers aren’t looked after well and their hunger, comfort, and play needs aren’t met, living in a dirty house can make social workers take them away faster.

Kids and teens will also rebel against the mess, leading to lower grades and feeling unhappy at home.

Adults will struggle to learn new things in such a messy place. They won’t get promotions, making them more frustrated.

Happy Simming!
