If you’ve been playing The Sims 4: Cottage Living for a while, you may eventually notice one of your chickens covered in a green cloud of stink. Check the chicken’s needs, and you’ll probably find that its hygiene is low.

The confusing part is that you can’t clean an individual chicken the same way you can clean a cow or llama. Instead, chicken cleanliness is tied to the coop.

Click on the chicken coop and select Clean Coop.

Once the coop is clean, the chickens can become clean as well. Chickens may not register as clean immediately, so give them a little time after cleaning the coop.

If a chicken continues to show as dirty, call the chickens into the coop and clean it again. Chickens can take a while to register as clean, particularly when they’re roaming away from the coop.

Make cleaning the coop part of your regular routine, especially if you have several chickens sharing it.

If you’ve cleaned the coop and the chicken still has a green stink cloud, don’t assume that you need to find another way to clean it. There is no in-game interaction that lets you bathe an individual chicken.

Instead, call the chickens into the coop, clean the coop again if necessary, and give them some time to update their hygiene.

If a chicken remains dirty after you’ve cleaned its coop, click on the chicken and look for Discuss Preening.

This can encourage a dirty chicken to clean itself. Chickens can also preen themselves, so you don’t necessarily need to interact with them every time their hygiene drops.

Regularly cleaning the coop is the simplest way to prevent your chickens from becoming dirty in the first place.

A dirty coop can contribute to your chickens becoming unhappy, so keeping up with the cleaning is an important part of looking after them.

If you’re managing several chickens, it can be easy to overlook the coop while you’re busy feeding the animals, collecting eggs, and taking care of the rest of your farm.

Dirty chickens can become unhappy, and neglecting your livestock can eventually cause problems.

Chickens can become miserable when their needs aren’t properly maintained, and problems with their coop can leave them unhappy or starving.
