If you want to learn more about chickens in The Sims 4, keep reading this guide.
Buy Chicken Coops and Build a Fence
A chicken coop is a key investment when starting your farm. It helps generate income, especially early on.
To raise and breed chickens, first buy a Chicken Coop from Build/Buy mode. You can also purchase a lot that already has a Chicken Coop.
Place the coop on your lot, then click on it to buy chicks, hens, and roosters. You can choose from white, brown, and black chickens. Each coop can hold up to 8 chickens, and you can place multiple coops on your farm.
Chickens cost between 75 to 200 Simoleons each.
Chickens return to their coop at 6 PM and come out again at 6 AM.
Make sure to place a fence around your coops and lock the gate. This stops chickens from wandering off, making it easier for your Sim to manage them.
If you have The Sims 4 Seasons installed, your chickens won’t be affected by severe weather. However, it’s best to call them inside during heavy rain or snow to keep them safe.
How to Keep Your Chickens Happy
Egg quality depends on how happy your chickens are. There are four key elements to measure their happiness: Happiness, Hygiene, Hunger, and Attention.
Hover your cursor over the chickens to check their happiness levels. Keep all four indicators in the green. Socialize with your chickens regularly to keep them content.
You can name each chicken individually. Each has its own needs and relationship with your Sim. Buying animal clothing and dressing your chickens up can also improve your relationship with them.
If your chickens become too unhappy, they’ll run away. Make sure to take good care of them to keep them happy and prevent this.
Clean Your Chicken Coops Regularly
Hover over your coop with your cursor to check its status. If it’s dirty, clean it right away to keep your chickens happy and healthy.
Cleaning the coops can sometimes give you different fertilizers, which you can use to grow your crops. Also, talk to your chickens about preening to encourage them to clean themselves.
To feed your chickens, click on the coop and select the Feed option. Do this every day to ensure they stay well-fed.
Upgrade your coops for less maintenance using Livestock Upgrade Parts. Sims can get these parts by running errands for NPCs.
Upgrade Your Coop for Better Chicken Care
Install a coop auto-feeder and get a ComfortCare Life Extender to help your chickens feel more relaxed.
Don’t forget to install a fox alarm to keep foxes away. If your chickens seem scared all the time, it’s likely due to wild foxes. Install a Fox-Be-Gone alarm as soon as possible to protect your chickens and eggs.
Another great idea is to place a llama shed near your coops. Llamas will spit on any foxes trying to steal your eggs, helping to keep your chickens safe.
Angry Chickens Can Kill Sims
If you use too many negative interactions with your chickens, they can get so angry that they’ll peck your eyes out. Chickens can actually kill you.
This is why it’s crucial to keep them happy. Happy chickens with a high relationship with your Sim are less likely to attack. Always treat your chickens well to avoid any dangerous situations.
Evil Chicken Are Real
If you give your chickens a Midnight Treat, they’ll turn into Evil Chickens. An Obsidian egg can also hatch an evil chick.
If your Sims eat recipes containing Obsidian eggs, they’ll turn into Evil Sims and can set things on fire just by looking at them.
Evil Chickens are more likely to lay Obsidian Eggs. The coolest part is you can ask your Evil Chicken for help. They’ll attack Grimmy or Vlad if they’re around.
Golden Chickens Can Make You Rich
Golden chickens are very helpful. They lay golden eggs most of the time, and you can sell each egg for about 300 Simoleons. The fastest way to get a hatchable golden egg is to buy it from the stalls in Finchwick.
You can also feed your hens Golden Treats to turn them into Golden Chickens.
Golden chickens can improve the quality of all the eggs laid in your coop. If your chickens won’t eat Golden Treats, socialize with them first using Friendly interactions.

Manage Your Eggs Properly
As your hens lay eggs, you can place the eggs in your inventory or leave them in the coop to hatch. For hatchable eggs, make sure there’s at least one rooster in the coop.
Not all eggs will be hatchable. Use the unhatchable eggs for cooking. Chickens lay eggs daily, so you’ll have a steady supply.
Eggs in your inventory can spoil if kept too long. To prevent this, store them in the fridge.
Be aware that your fridge might break sometimes. Repair it quickly or replace it to avoid losing your eggs.
Trade Your Chickens for Money and Rewards
If you need extra Simoleons or have too many animals to care for, consider downsizing your chicken population. You can trade your feathered friends for meat, money, and other rewards like animal treats and cooking ingredients.
Showcase Your Chickens and Eggs at the Finchwick Fair
Breed the perfect hen or rooster, produce the biggest egg, and display them proudly at the fair. You can win prizes for your achievements, judged by the mayor.
Chicken Lifespan and Aging
Chickens have a limited lifespan of around 20 days, passing through four life stages: chick, young adult, adult, and elder. Eventually, they’ll die of old age, and the Grim Reaper will reap their souls.
To extend their lifespan, give them a special treat (Healthy Treat). Alternatively, you can disable animal aging in the Game Options to prevent your chickens from dying.
Happy Simming!
