Moving to a new house or lot in The Sims 4 comes with a choice that affects everything your Sim owns.
When you move, the Move screen gives you two options: Keep Furniture vs. Sell Furniture.
Keep Furniture: Every item from your old house goes into household inventory, so you can bring it all to the new house.
Sell Furniture: Anything not already moved to household inventory gets sold automatically, and your Sim gets Simoleons in return.
If you have specific items you want to keep, like masterpiece paintings or upgraded objects, move them into your Sim’s inventory first.
Then choose Sell Furniture to clear out everything else and get some cash back at the same time.
Always save your game before moving. If anything goes wrong, you’ll want a backup to fall back on.
This is a different process from moving your Sim to a new household. Here’s how it works:
Enter Build Mode and save a copy of the house to your library.
Move any upgraded or crafted items into your Sim’s inventory or household inventory.
Go to Manage Worlds and select the new lot.
Enter Build Mode on the new lot and place the saved house from your library.
Use the Move Out Household option to move your Sims onto the new lot.
Once everything loads, arrange your items as needed.
Important: If you move out without saving crafted or upgraded items to your Sim’s or household inventory first, those items will be lost during the transfer.
What Happens to Retail Assets
Retail assets are tied to the household, not the lot. That means moving your Sim won’t affect an existing retail business, and it stays fully intact.
Keep Furniture: Nothing is lost. Everything, including plants and garden produce, moves with you.
Sell Furniture: Only items you manually placed in your inventory beforehand survive the move. Everything else gets sold.
The one exception either way is planter boxes, which can’t be moved and don’t transfer with the household.
Before moving out, go into Build & Buy Mode and place the following into household inventory:
Upgraded items
Career rewards
Garden plants
Any other items you don’t want to risk losing
Once you’ve moved to the new lot, you can pull everything back out of inventory and place it wherever you like.
Plants can move with you as long as they’re placed in household inventory first. They won’t wither while sitting in inventory, and quality stays the same once replanted, though they’ll need time to grow back to full size.
Harvest everything first. If you skip this, you’ll end up with loose fruit and produce scattered around after the move.
Money trees: Consider placing them in inventory before harvesting so you get Money Tree seeds to plant at the new location.
Don’t upload your garden to the Gallery as a workaround. Doing this won’t bring all your plants along, so it’s not a reliable substitute for using household inventory.
Garden boxes can’t be moved. Like planter boxes, they stay behind no matter what.
