How to Be in an Open Relationship in The Sims 4

The Sims 4 supports open relationships through the romantic boundaries settings. You can even turn off jealousy completely, and let Sims have multiple romantic relationships without upsetting any of their partners.

To let Sims have open relationships, you need to disable all the jealousy triggers.

You can adjust a Sim’s Romantic Boundaries in CAS by going to the Gender settings tab.

  • This Sim feels jealousy if any romantic partner engages in non-physical romance with other Sims
  • This Sim feels jealousy if any romantic partner engages in physical romance with other Sims
  • This Sim feels jealousy if any romantic partner engages in Woohoo with other Sims

Sims with traits like Serial Romantic, Noncommittal, or Romantic are more likely to engage in open relationships.

Change Romantic Boundaries

You can also ask your Sim’s partner to reconsider the romantic boundaries to open up the relationship.

To do this in The Sims 4, select the romantic partner, go to the Relationship tab, choose Change Relationship, and then Ask to Reconsider Romantic Boundaries.

You can reconsider one boundary at a time.

If you want to avoid upsetting a Sim’s romantic partner, stick to romantic activities that won’t trigger jealousy. You can only ask your partner to reconsider one romantic boundary at a time.

For example, if the physical romance boundary is turned off, your Sim can hug or kiss other Sims without issues.

But if the Woohoo boundary hasn’t been changed, their partner will still get jealous if your Sim woohoos with someone else.

If you want your Sim to Woohoo with a new partner without causing jealousy, you’ll need to wait until you can ask their current partner to reconsider the Woohoo jealousy boundary.

Heads up!

If you ask your Sim’s partner to change their romantic boundaries, they might refuse. Sims have their own personalities and preferences, so some may be unwilling to open up the relationship.

Happy Simming!
