Sometimes when you’re placing an object in The Sims 4, you’ll get the “Must be placed on specific objects” message. This usually means the item has to be placed on or inside another object.
For example, microwaves need to sit on counters, while dishwashers need to be installed underneath counters.
Place the item on the correct object
For microwaves, place a counter first and then put the microwave on top of it. You can use a basic counter, but make sure there’s nothing else occupying the counter space.
Dishwashers work slightly differently. Place the dishwasher underneath a counter, using the exact same space. The counter shouldn’t have a sink or another object occupying that area.
If you own Dine Out, you can also use the freestanding dishwasher, which doesn’t require a counter.
You can also try enabling MoveObjects:
testingcheats true
Then enter:
bb.moveobjects on
This removes many of the normal placement restrictions and lets you move objects more freely.
However, it doesn’t override every placement requirement. A microwave still needs to be placed on a suitable surface, and a standard dishwasher still needs to go underneath a counter.
If you’re trying to place an object at a particular height, you can use the 9 key to raise it and the 0 key to lower it.
For example, you can raise a microwave to roughly table height and then hold Alt while positioning it.
This can help when you’re trying to create a custom setup, although the object may still have its normal placement requirements.
If you own Cottage Living and get the same error when trying to move a cow or llama from your household inventory into an animal shed, the shed itself may be causing the problem.
Try deleting the existing shed and placing a new one from Build Mode.
Once you’ve placed the new shed, try assigning the cow or llama again. In some cases, this fixes the placement error and allows the animal to be assigned to the shed normally.
