Can’t Marry Sims in Your Employ: Here’s What It Means

Sometimes, when you try to propose in The Sims 4, you might get an alert saying it’s inappropriate to marry a Sim in your employ.

Here’s what you can do when you get this notification.

Break Up with Other Partners

If your Sim or their partner has other romantic relationships, the propose option will be greyed out.

To fix this, break up with all other romantic partners. Invite these partners over and ask to just be friends.

If your Sim is working on the Serial Romantic aspiration, which requires having 8 partners, break up with all of them first.

The game might get confused if there are multiple partners. It forces you to settle down with one partner to make things easier.

Check for Job Conflicts

The game might think there’s a conflict even if there isn’t a real employment relationship.

For example, a writer Sim might face a conflict if their partner is a mail carrier since writers use the mailbox for their books.

If both Sims are freelancers, the game might say marrying a Sim in your employ isn’t allowed when you try to propose or plan the wedding. The easy fix is to have one Sim quit their job, and then it’ll work.

You’ll often get this message if your Sim is dating the Grim Reaper but works as a reaper herself.

Basically, even though your Sim and the Grim Reaper weren’t technically “employed by each other,” the game still sees her Reaper job as “in the same line of work” and blocks the marriage.

Solution

  • If you suspect a job conflict, have your Sim’s partner quit their job.
  • Then, check if the option to propose becomes available.

Install the “Inappropriate to Marry” Mod

  1. Download the Mod:
  2. Download the Fix Script:
    • Scroll down to the middle of the page.
    • Click on the Files tab.
    • Download the .zip file containing the fix script.
  3. Install the Mod:
    • Extract the .zip file.
    • Place the extracted files into your Sims 4 Mods folder, usually found at Documents → Electronic Arts → The Sims 4 → Mods.

The script is compatible with the latest game updates.

After installing the mod, check if the option to propose is now available.
