The Sims 4: How Cat and Dog Genetics Really Work

In The Sims 4, pet genetics are much simpler than what many players remember from The Sims 3. Cats and dogs don’t really “mix” when they have offspring. Puppies and kittens inherit traits from one parent or the other, rather than blending both.

Their coats will either come from parent A or parent B, and custom-painted coats don’t merge.

Female offspring often lean toward the mother’s patterns, while males usually take after the father.

That said, pets aren’t exact clones. A kitten might have the tail from mom but the eyes or ears from dad, so there is still some tiny variation.

Compared to The Sims 3, where offspring could get a real combination of both parents’ coats and markings, The Sims 4 feels a lot more limited.

You won’t get a mix like a rainbow-spotted dog because the game doesn’t support layered coats, so breeding often feels too predictable.

Happy Simming!
